Voting Rights, Civil Discourse & the Courts

Join us for a 3-part series of one-day professional development programs for educators offering up-close access to judges, legal scholars, and court professionals to learn more about the framework of our legal system and discuss issues related to federal elections, voting rights, and news literacy. Each day will stand-alone, but the content will also build upon itself over the course of the seminars allowing you flexibility to attend the sessions that work for you. CPDU hours will be available for each seminar.

Session Dates

Saturday April 13th,
9:30am-2:00 pm

We will focus on the framework of our legal system within our electoral system and ongoing constitutional debates.

Tuesday June 18th
9:30am-2:00 pm

Join us at the federal courthouse for a unique day, including watching court proceedings, panel discussions with federal court judges and court personnel and a behind-the-scenes tour of the courthouse.

Saturday October 5th 9:30am-2:00 pm
We will dive deep into the role of the courts in voting rights and elections and explore the impact of media literacy in this election cycle.

Digging into Mahanoy v. B.L. with New York Times Legal Correspondent Adam Liptak

NY Times SCOTUS reporter Adam Liptak will be joined by Joaquin Alvarado (Co-Founder Studio To Be and James B. McClatchy Foundation Board Member) to explore the recent Supreme Court ruling in Mahanoy v. B.L. (the cheerleader cursing case) and to talk about current student free speech rights and case law. Adam will also provide insight on his role as a Supreme Court reporter.

Applying Tinker v. Des Moines in Your Classroom

Join us with the team from iCivics to discuss classroom application of landmark First Amendment school cases through the Educating for American Democracy Roadmap – get classroom ready resources you can put to use in the fall.
